Introducing Got Matcha's Handmade Tea Bowls & Whisk Holders
The Tea Bowl, also known as the "Chawan"
Tea bowls are generally available in a wide range of sizes and styles. Shallow bowls, which allow the tea to cool rapidly, are used in summer; deep bowls are typically used in winter. Got Matcha has contracted with a generations-old family of artisans to create our handcrafted tea bowls.
Our unique tea bowls and whisk holders are made by hand.
The best bowls are thrown by hand; not machine. This process of “throwing” (which means to twist or turn) is made by centering a ball of clay (specifically stoneware) on the potter’s wheel, and forming and shaping the bowl as the wheel twists and turns. Irregularities and imperfections are prized and are another aspect of what makes our unique bowls truly “one-of-a-kind”.
Once the stoneware clay bowl is completed, it is then air dried and heated to over 2200 degrees in special kilns. A kiln is an oven or furnace, used for firing the clay and porcelain pieces to their hardened final state in what is known as “bisque-firing”. The next and final step in the creation of our unique tea bowl is the glazing phase.
Glaze is a layer of ceramic or glass, which is applied by hand dusting, dipping or brushing a thin slurry on the surface of the pottery; used to both seal the piece and /or decorate it.
Got Matcha’s handmade tea bowls are truly one-of-a kind, in both structure and appearance. Although we strive for a basic continuity of color and shape, please understand that each bowl and whisk holder will be slightly different, as the glaze comes out of the kiln with slight differences from each firing.
We have 3 unique finishes, each available with a matching whisk holder. Teal/Spice, Jade Green and Cobalt Blue
*All of our handcraft stoneware pieces are dishwasher and microwave safe.
